To meet this safety function, switches offer two alternative switching functions, the \u201chysteresis\u201d and the \u201cwindow\u201d functions.<\/p>\n<p>In general, these two switching functions differ from each other in that the \u201chysteresis\u201d function monitors a limit value and the \u201cwindow\u201d function monitors a set range.Thus, the switching function \u201chysteresis\u201d monitors whether a critical value (switch point) has been exceeded. The \u201cwindow\u201d switching function monitors whether the monitored process is within the set range (within the upper and lower limits = \u201cwindow high\u201d and \u201cwindow low\u201d), or whether this set range has been exceeded either above or below. In the case of mechanical switches, the hysteresis is predefined already by design, while in the case of electronic switches, however, it is also configurable by the end user.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the historical importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-en\/psm01.WIKA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\">mechanical switches<\/a> and their continued use in simple and often cost-sensitive applications, the switching function \u201chysteresis\u201d remains the most important and widely used option for monitoring critical set points.
