David Lehr received the Friedrich Dessauer Award from VDE Rhein-Main for his master\u2019s thesis. The thesis was written as part of a cooperation between WIKA and the Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences (UAS). The title is \u201cDesign and implementation of a hardware and software architecture for field instruments in the process industry with a focus on the PROFINET protocol\u201d. Dr.-Ing. Peter Fischer supervised the work on the thesis.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the Friedrich Dessauer Award, the VDE Rhein-Main honours outstanding achievements in the technical and scientific field. In addition, it sets an example for the social importance of engineers and their work.<\/p>\n

As part of David Lehr\u2019s master\u2019s thesis, a demonstrator of a field instrument was developed, which connects PROFINET via Ethernet \u201cAdvanced Physical Layer\u201d (APL). APL is a new standard that describes the use of Ethernet at the field level of the process industry. Data rates of up to ten megabits per second are achieved via a two-wire line, and the devices are also supplied with power via these data lines even in hazardous areas.<\/p>\n

PROFINET is used as the communications protocol. The use of so-called profiles enables standardised access to device data and thus increases the interchangeability and interoperability of field instruments. WIKA has thus taken an important step towards the future of industrial, digital measurement technology for the process markets \u2013 a step that the company specifically acknowledges.<\/p>\n
