Em consequ\u00eancia das continuas cargas mec\u00e2nicas, qu\u00edmicas e t\u00e9rmicas, estes instrumentos envelhecem e, portanto, podem n\u00e3o garantir a exatid\u00e3o dos valores medidos ao longo do tempo. Contudo, atrav\u00e9s de calibra\u00e7\u00f5es com uma frequ\u00eancia determinada, altera\u00e7\u00f5es dos valores medidos podem ser determinados e corrigidos atrav\u00e9s de ajuste (quando poss\u00edvel).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No processo de calibra\u00e7\u00e3o, o valor da indica\u00e7\u00e3o de um instrumento de medi\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 comparado com o resultado de medi\u00e7\u00e3o de um dispositivo de medi\u00e7\u00e3o diferenciado que \u00e9 conhecido por funcionar corretamente e com exatid\u00e3o o qual, por sua vez, foi constru\u00eddo para coincidir direta ou indiretamente com um instrumento de refer\u00eancia nacional (ou internacional). Em resumo, para poder comparar resultados de medi\u00e7\u00e3o, estas devem ser &#8220;rastre\u00e1veis&#8221; a um padr\u00e3o nacional ou internacional atrav\u00e9s de uma cadeia de medi\u00e7\u00f5es comparativas. A hierarquia de calibra\u00e7\u00e3o mostrada na figura (usando um exemplo da Alemanha) retrata a rastreabilidade de um instrumento de medi\u00e7\u00e3o de uma empresa at\u00e9 um padr\u00e3o nacional do PTB (Instituto Nacional de Metrologia da Alemanha).<\/p>\n<p>Para garantir na pratica a rastreabilidade, devem ser observados os seguintes pontos, entre outros:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square\">\n<li>\u00a0A cadeia de compara\u00e7\u00e3o nunca deve ser interrompida.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A incerteza de medi\u00e7\u00e3o deve ser conhecida em cada est\u00e1gio da cadeia de calibra\u00e7\u00e3o para que a incerteza de medi\u00e7\u00e3o total possa ser calculada. Como regra geral, um instrumento de medi\u00e7\u00e3o superior deve ter uma exatid\u00e3o de medi\u00e7\u00e3o tr\u00eas a quatro vezes maior.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Cada etapa da cadeia de calibra\u00e7\u00e3o deve ser documentada, incluindo os resultados da medi\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Todos os organismos que realizam uma etapa na cadeia devem comprovar a sua compet\u00eancia por meio de acredita\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0As calibra\u00e7\u00f5es devem ser repetidas em intervalos apropriados.
