But when the medium or environment is harsh, the instruments\u2019 internal parts can become damaged. In these instances, a diaphragm seal can make all the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A diaphragm seal separates a pressure instrument from the process media. (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<h2>What Is a Diaphragm Seal?<\/h2>\n<p><span>A diaphragm seal is a thin corrugated disc that separates the media being measured from the pressure measuring instrument. <\/span>The space between the diaphragm and the <span>pressure gauge, process transmitter, or pressure switch<\/span> is filled with a system fluid, which hydraulically transmits pressure from the flexible diaphragm. Thanks to corrugation, the contact surface between the media and the diaphragm is relatively large, which ensures more accurate pressure measurements \u2013 especially for very low pressures (\u2264 8.7 bar \/ 600 mbar).<\/p>\n<p>By preventing media from contacting the pressure measuring element directly, a diaphragm seal also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eliminates clogging and crystallization in the measuring instrument<\/li>\n<li>Minimizes corrosion<\/li>\n<li>Protects the sensing element from extreme temperatures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When paired with a diaphragm seal, the measuring instrument can be used at temperatures from \u2212130 to +750\u00b0F (\u221290 to +399\u00b0C), as well as with aggressive, corrosive, heterogeneous, abrasive, highly viscous, or toxic media.
