Therefore, it is important to recognize the errors \u2013 and to understand how they come about.<\/p>\n<h2>Three Types of Errors That Cause Pressure Sensor Inaccuracies<\/h2>\n<p>Using a simple analogy and easy-to-follow animation, this short video from WIKA describes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HrXNZWDktYA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">three main errors<\/a> that affect pressure sensor accuracy.<\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:133px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2019\/02\/error-1_zero-point-1-388x314.png\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zero-point error<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<h3>Zero-point error\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>The start of the measuring range is too high or too low \u2013 the deviation from the zero point. This type of pressure sensor error shifts the entire scale up or down (red line) by that zero offset value in parallel with the ideal characteristic curve (green line).<\/p>\n<h3>\n<\/h3>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:133px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2019\/02\/error-2_span-1-388x314.png\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Span error<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<h3>Span error<\/h3>\n<p>The distances between the individual divisions \u2013 the span \u2013 from the zero point to the full-scale value are even but wrong; the span is either consistently larger or smaller than the ideal. At the lower end of the scale, span errors are not very obvious. It is at the upper range that the pressure output deviates noticeably from the actual.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:133px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2019\/02\/error-3_non-linearity-388x314.png\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Non-linearity<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<h3>Non-linearity<\/h3>\n<p>With this type of sensor error, the distances between the individual divisions from the zero point to the full-scale value are not evenly distributed. This non-linearity has the effect of producing output signals that change at an inconstant rate, thus creating a curved line rather than the straight line of the ideal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some users use the terms <em>pressure sensor accuracy\u00a0<\/em>and <em>pressure sensor non-linearity <\/em>interchangeably. But as the video demonstrates, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/knowhow\/pressure-transmitter-accuracy-and-non-linearity\/\">non-linearity is just one of the errors that cause inaccuracies<\/a>. And in real life, more than one error can occur at the same time. This can have the effect of canceling each other out or compounding the inaccuracies.<\/p>\n<h2>What to Do about Pressure Sensor Inaccuracies<\/h2>\n<p>In real life, pressure sensors are not 100% accurate \u2013 not even calibration-grade equipment. For example, WIKA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/cpg2500.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">CPG2500 precision pressure measuring instrument<\/a>\u00a0has an accuracy of 0.008% of IS (IntelliScale) and a precision of 0.004% of full scale.<\/p>\n<p>Standards organizations like the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) set allowable maximum errors for devices. For example, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/s_20.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">S-20 superior pressure transmitter<\/a> comes in three accuracy specifications of non-linearity: \u2264 \u00b10.5%, \u2264 \u00b10.25%, and \u2264 \u00b10.125% of span. Its factory-set zero-point errors are either\u00a0\u2264 \u00b10.2% or \u2264 \u00b10.1% of span.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/calibration_services.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Regular calibrations<\/a> ensure that a pressure sensor\u2019s errors remain within allowable limits.
