This article, the first of a three-part series, explores this technology&#8217;s history and the basic\u00a0mechanics of how a hydroelectric power plant works.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Humans have long harnessed the energy of water to operate machinery. To this day, hydropower remains a\u00a0significant source of electricity around the world. To ensure safety and efficiency, modern hydroelectric plants\u00a0rely on an array of measurement instruments to monitor level, flow, pressure, and temperature throughout\u00a0the processes.<\/p>\n<p>For thousands of years, water has been the main source of power to run systems for grinding grains, irrigating\u00a0fields, and processing timber. In the late 1800s, people started to use hydropower to generate electricity. The first\u00a0commercial hydropower plant in the U.S. was built at Niagara Falls in 1879. Continuous improvements have made\u00a0hydroelectric power plants safer and more efficient than ever.<\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:396px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2019\/07\/three-gorges-dam_resized-388x218.jpg\" alt=\"Three Gorges Dam, China\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Three Gorges Dam, on the Yangtze River in east-central China, is the world&#8217;s largest power station.<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<p>Today, hydropower is a major and reliable source of electricity. What\u2019s more, it is clean and renewable. Because\u00a0they are independent of weather conditions (except for drought), hydroelectric plants can provide more\u00a0dependable service than solar or wind farms. In addition, the ability to control flow allows each plant to adapt its\u00a0<span>output to meet market demands. It\u2019s no wonder that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ipfs.io\/ipfs\/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJnKLwHCnL72vedxjQkDDP1mXWo6uco\/wiki\/List_of_largest_power_stations_in_the_world.html\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">9 out of the 10 largest power-producing facilities in the world<\/a>\u00a0run on the power of water. (Kashiwazaki-Kariwa in Japan, the sixth largest, is a nuclear power plant.)<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2>How a Hydroelectric\u00a0Power Plant Works<\/h2>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width:433px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2019\/07\/dam-diagram_resized-388x243.jpg\" alt=\"How a Hydroelectric Power Plant Works\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">diagram of a hydropower dam<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<p>Basically, a modern hydropower plant is comprised of a\u00a0reservoir, a dam, penstocks, turbines, and generators. The\u00a0<strong>reservoir<\/strong>\u00a0stores the \u201cfuel\u201d and allow operators to\u00a0control how much water is fed to the turbines. It also\u00a0serves as a decanter: Most of the dirt and debris in the\u00a0water settle at its bottom and away from the intake area.<\/p>\n<p>Water from the reservoir is delivered to the turbines\u00a0through the <strong>intake<\/strong> <strong>(dam gates)<\/strong> and <strong>penstock<\/strong>. A filtering\u00a0system at the intake further cleans up the water to\u00a0ensure that it is relatively free of suspended solids,\u00a0which could damage the turbine\u2019s blades. <strong>Hydraulic\u00a0systems<\/strong> \u2013 the governor, the brakes, the gate controls,\u00a0and so on \u2013 work together to open and close the\u00a0apertures that allow water to flow downstream from\u00a0the reservoir.<\/p>\n<p>The water wheel of the past has evolved into the\u00a0modern <strong>turbine<\/strong>. Differing mainly in their blade shape\u00a0and configuration, the three main types are the Francis\u00a0turbine, the Kaplan turbine, and the Pelton turbine \u2013\u00a0named after their inventors. Regardless of design, the\u00a0turbine converts the kinetic energy of moving or falling\u00a0water into mechanical energy. The turbine is connected\u00a0through the shaft to the rotor of a <strong>generator<\/strong> that\u00a0converts the mechanical energy into electricity. For the\u00a0greatest efficiency, turbines are custom-made for each\u00a0hydroelectric plant.<\/p>\n<p>While the concepts of hydropower are simple and\u00a0straightforward, the operations are anything but. Each\u00a0modern hydroelectric power plant relies on a multitude\u00a0of complex systems that monitor, control, and improve\u00a0conditions to ensure proper operations. Bearings and\u00a0lubricating systems minimize friction and wear and\u00a0tear in moving parts. Filters trap the particulate that\u00a0can abrade turbine blades. Powerful hydraulic systems\u00a0open and close the penstock gates.
