Knowing the density of SF<sub>6<\/sub> is the best way to make sure gas-filled components are not safety compromised.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><span>SF6 Density Overview<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>Sulfur hexafluoride<\/span>\u00a0(SF<sub>6<\/sub>) is an extremely effective electrical insulator used in a variety of applications, especially in medium- and high-voltage gas-insulated equipment (GIE) like switchgears, disconnectors, transducers, transformers, and ring main units. If GIE relied on air or N<sub>2\u00a0<\/sub>alone to extinguish electric arcs, it would have to be almost three times as large. But to maintain proper insulation, the density of SF<sub>6<\/sub>\u00a0inside the equipment must remain within certain levels.<\/p>\n<p>What would cause the gas density to drop in the first place? There are two reasons, and they\u2019re interrelated:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over time, GIE could develop tiny fissures that allow SF<sub>6<\/sub> to escape. Fugitive emissions means there\u2019s less insulating gas inside the chamber. What\u2019s more, as SF<sub>6<\/sub> is a powerful greenhouse gas, any leaks harm the environment.\n<\/li>\n<li>In the presence of fissures, air could enter the GIE. Ambient air is problematic because it contains <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/products\/sf6-products\/water-impurity-sf6-gas\/\">water vapor<\/a>, which combines with sulfur and fluorine molecules after an electrical discharge to produce a host of toxic decomposition products like sulfur dioxide (SO<sub>2<\/sub>) and sulfuryl fluoride (SO<sub>2<\/sub>F<sub>2<\/sub>). These and other byproducts corrode gas compartments, leading to more leaks and even lower SF<sub>6<\/sub> density. What\u2019s more, some decomposition products are neurotoxic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><span>Monitoring SF6 Density with Gas Density Indicators<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>For decades, the transmission and distribution (T&amp;D) sector has relied on WIKA\u2019s analog\u00a0<span>GDI-100<\/span>\u00a0gas density indicators to detect leaks and maintain proper gas pressure. Hermetically sealed, robust, and temperature-compensated, this device remains the go-to gauge for monitoring SF<sub>6<\/sub>\u00a0gas in closed-tank electrical switchgear. To do so, it measures pressure inside the tank with the\u00a0CPG1500 precision digital pressure gauge. There\u2019s also a temperature sensor that compensates for temperature variations (referenced to 20\u00b0C). Using these measurements, the unit\u2019s internal algorithm quickly calculates the density of SF<sub>6<\/sub> gas.<\/p>\n<p>This gas density indicator is simple to operate. It has a user-friendly navigation menu and a lighted display with integral bar graphs and large text area. A data logger stores up to three measured values per second.<\/p>\n<p>An exceptional 0.6% accuracy makes the\u00a0GDI-100-D\u00a0the ideal instrument for verifying and calibrating other gas density indicators, monitors, and sensors. It is also useful for checking the tightness of a tank after maintenance or repairs.<\/p>\n<h2><span>SF6 Gas Density Indicator with Digital Capabilities<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Today\u2019s connected systems call for smart devices. The GDI-100-D comes with Bluetooth for wireless communication between the gas density indicator and a user\u2019s software for remote monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>myWIKA device<\/strong>app, available on both\u00a0<span>Google Play<\/span>\u00a0and Apple\u2019s\u00a0<span>App Store<\/span>, offers additional flexibility for configuring the instrument and monitoring SF<sub>6<\/sub>\u00a0gas.
