This configuration is extremely precise, easy to install and use, and not susceptible to temperature variations.<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Originally designed to measure pressure before and after the fluid encounters an interruption, a\u00a0differential pressure transmitter can also determine liquid levels\u00a0<span>by calculating the differential pressure between the liquid and gaseous phases of the fluid inside a closed tank. <\/span>The main problem, however, is that the small pipe (capillary) used to connect those two phases is subject to <span>Gay-Lussac\u2019s Law: Within an enclosed system, the pressure of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature. In other\u00a0words, higher temperatures lead to higher-than-actual pressure readings\u00a0<\/span>(see <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/products\/level-products\/how-differential-pressure-transmitters-measure-level\/\">Part 1 of this series<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Differential Pressure Measurement with Two Interconnected Process Transmitters<\/h2>\n<p>WIKA has developed a solution to the challenges of temperature fluctuations and inaccurate readings. Our innovative system takes two of the same process transmitter, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/cpt_20_cpt_21.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">CPT-2X <\/a>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/ipt_20_ipt_21.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">IPT-2X<\/a>, and connects them via a signal cable.<\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:208px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2020\/03\/figure-3-20200318105208.jpg\" alt=\"Level measurement using two process transmitters\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 3: Level measurement using two interconnected process transmitters<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<p>In this configuration, the subordinate process transmitter measures the gas pressure (P<sub>1<\/sub>) and communicates that reading to the principal over an internal bus (Figure 3). The principal transmitter measures the liquid pressure (P<sub>2<\/sub>) and then calculates the difference between P<sub>1\u00a0<\/sub>and P<sub>2<\/sub>. Using that difference, as well as pre-programmed parameters such as the tank\u2019s geometric variables and the liquid\u2019s specific density, the principal is able to determine the liquid\u2019s precise volume and level. It then sends that value to a control room and\/or displays it on the transmitter as a digital or analog signal. The principal also parameterizes and powers the subordinate.<\/p>\n<p>Without needing to use capillaries, this system handles even wide temperature fluctuations with ease. Its accuracy equivalent is up to 0.05 % of the set span. Furthermore, the signal cable is not susceptible to capillary-related failures.<\/p>\n<h2>Pressure Transmitters vs. Process Transmitters <br \/>\nfor Differential Pressure Measurement<\/h2>\n<p>In theory, this system could work with pressure transmitters as well as process transmitters. However, using pressure transmitters would require several additional components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A device to perform calculations<\/li>\n<li>A second voltage unit to power the subordinate<\/li>\n<li>Two pressure inputs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because process transmitters have all the above components already baked in, it is a simpler, more cost-effective system.<\/p>\n<h2><span>Advantages of Using Process Transmitters for Differential Pressure Measurement<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>WIKA\u2019s smart solution not only minimizes sensitivity to temperature variations, it also provides other important benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Faster turnaround time.<\/strong> Since there are no capillaries, there is no need to run upstream tests to verify that all air pockets have been eliminated from impulse and pressure lines.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Easier and cheaper replacement.\u00a0<\/strong>In the event of a malfunction, only the faulty process transmitter has to be replaced. When using traditional differential pressure transmitters, the entire system has to be replaced.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optimized signal span.\u00a0<\/strong>As long as the process transmitter is not turned down past the recommended limit (normally less than 5:1), spans can be set up individually, scaling each transmitter\u2019s measuring range to the values actually relevant for the process.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Greater versatility.\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">This system is ideal for homogeneous liquids as well as heterogeneous\/diverse media.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Level Measurement in Diverse Media<\/h2>\n<p>A system that uses two process transmitters for differential pressure measurement is ideal for measuring level in mixed media.\u00a0In the manufacture of fruit juice, for example, this type of system can determine the concentrate-to-water ratio based on density and, hence, pressure change.\u00a0Another example is the bilge tanks in ships, where water mixes with lubricants and other fluids.
