To choose the right load cell for a particular application, users should consider three factors: the environment, the location, and the load itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the humble bathroom scale to enormous ship-to-shore cranes, a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/products\/force-products\/shear-beams-bending-beams\/\">weighing technologies<\/a> rely on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/load_cells.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">load cells<\/a>. These force transducers convert compression, pressure, tension, or torque into electrical signals, and are found in many applications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/food_and_beverages.WIKA?tab=1\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Food &amp; beverage<\/strong><\/a>: filling machines, packaging units, price labelers<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/pharmaceuticals_and_biotechnology.WIKA?tab=1\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Pharmaceuticals &amp; biotechnology<\/strong><\/a>: incubators, beds, infusion pumps<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/machine_building_and_automation.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Machine building &amp; automation<\/strong><\/a>: presses, stamps, robotics<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/mobile_working_machines.WIKA?tab=1\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Industrial vehicles &amp; machines<\/strong><\/a>: baling presses, fertilizer spreaders, livestock scales<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Load cells also are used to indirectly measure level. For example, sheer beams and bending beams \u2013 two types of load cells \u2013 are <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/products\/force-products\/strain-sensor-force-measurement\/\">installed at the base of a silo<\/a>, tank, or other reservoir. Knowing the material\u2019s weight, the container\u2019s geometry, and other variables, one can calculate how much material is currently inside the vessel. Since the load cell does not need to be in contact with the material, this method of level measurement is particularly suitable to applications containing aggressive, steaming, foamy, or dusty media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>The Process of Choosing a Load Cell<\/h2>\n<p>Choosing which load cell to use is a multi-step process involving several factors. Certainly, the load cell\u2019s measuring range, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/knowhow\/pressure-transmitter-accuracy-and-non-linearity\/\">accuracy, linearity, hysteresis, and repeatability<\/a> are important, but there are other key variables to keep in mind \u2013 ones that customers don\u2019t always consider and can mean the difference between successful outcomes and disappointing performance.<\/p>\n<p>When recommending a load cell, the force specialists at WIKA USA also look at the load\u2019s characteristics, the application\u2019s environment, and the load cell\u2019s location in the mechanism.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Load characteristics<\/h3>\n<p>The nature of the load and how it will interact with the load cell help determine the type of load cell to use. For example, a five-pound bowling ball gently placed on a scale is static loading, and it will not overwhelm the load cell structure. However, the same ball dropped from a height of three feet can create over 1,000 pounds of force. This is dynamic loading, and it will harm load cells not designed to withstand that much force.<\/p>\n<p>For a customer\u2019s dynamic loads, we would mitigate the effects \u2013 within the realm of what is physically possible \u00ad\u2013 with different designs of the load cell structure and by using a compression load cell like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/f1224.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">F1224<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:125px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2020\/10\/f2226.png\" alt=\"Tension\/compression force transducer\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">F2226 tension\/ compression force transducer<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<h3>2. Environmental factors<\/h3>\n<p>Where is the application\u2019s physical location? Will the load cells be indoors where they are protected? Or will they be outside, constantly exposed to moisture and humidity, significant dust, fluctuating temperatures, and extreme heat or cold? These and other environmental conditions can affect load cell behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Again, our experts would recommend solutions to mitigate these factors. For example, load cells for outdoor use should be made of materials with high water-corrosion resistance and have a higher <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/knowhow\/nema-rating-and-ip-rating-explaining-the-difference\/\">ingress protection (IP) rating<\/a>. Also, as load cell technology is based on the Wheatstone bridge circuit, temperature has a significant effect on the bridge\u2019s resistance and will affect force measurement. Therefore, temperature-compensated load cells, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/f2226.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">F2226 tension\/compression force transducer<\/a>, are a must in environments subject to temperature fluctuations. All WIKA load cells have temperature compensation.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Load cell location<\/h3>\n<p>Force equipment comes in myriad sizes and arrangements. As load cells are integrated within the equipment, they have to be a certain size and geometry \u2013 all depending on how much or little space is available, and how that available space is configured.<\/p>\n<p>The location will also determine which types of load cells are most suitable. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/applications\/weighing-the-difference-wika-offers-customizable-load-cell-systems-for-hospital-beds\/\">high-tech hospital beds<\/a> can use a variety of load cells. If mounting them between each caster wheel and its attachment point beneath the bed, use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/bending_beams_shear_beams.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">bending beams\/shear beams<\/a>.
