{"id":14016,"date":"2024-05-06T11:22:43","date_gmt":"2024-05-06T16:22:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/?p=14016"},"modified":"2026-01-30T14:13:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T19:13:22","slug":"momentum-gathers-for-hydrogen-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/knowhow\/momentum-gathers-for-hydrogen-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Worldwide in 2024, Momentum Gathers for Hydrogen Vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>While not as far along as other industrialized nations, the United States is seeing a definite move toward hydrogen-powered vehicles as a way to transition from carbon-based fuels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of the world\u2019s largest economies are enthusiastically embracing hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen vehicles as a way to reduce their carbon emissions and eliminate it altogether one day. Here are a few examples of decarbonization initiatives around the world:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Japan is pushing hard for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.japan.go.jp\/tomodachi\/2020\/earlysummer2020\/hydrogen.html\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>hydrogen-based society<\/span><\/a><span>. The country created its Basic Hydrogen Strategy in 2017, and the next year hosted the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meti.go.jp\/english\/press\/2020\/1015_001.html\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting<\/span><\/a><span> among interested governments. The Toyota Mirai is the world\u2019s first commercially available fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), and Japan currently has the world\u2019s largest facility for producing H<sub>2<\/sub> using renewable energy: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.power-eng.com\/emissions\/japanese-launch-worlds-largest-class-hydrogen-production-unit\/#gref\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field<\/span><\/a><span> (FH2R).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Germany\u2019s <\/span><span>National Hydrogen Strategy<\/span><span> has a 38-measure action plan that the country and the European Union will take by the end of 2023. The country currently has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/h2.live\/en\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>87 hydrogen filling stations<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0and 10 more in the planning stages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10098-020-01936-6\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>South Korea<\/span><\/a><span> and Hyundai have a vision of 2.9 million FCEVs by 2040. The country\u2019s HyNet consortium plans to build 100 new hydrogen refueling stations by next year. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleantech.com\/chinas-hydrogen-society-beginning-to-take-shape\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>China\u2019s plan for a hydrogen economy<\/span><\/a><span> includes more than 1 million FCEVs and 1,000 hydrogen refueling stations by 2030. Although numbers are hard to verify, the country has about one-quarter or one-third of the world\u2019s hydrogen stations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>France presented its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2020\/09\/14\/france-presents-national-hydrogen-strategy\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>national hydrogen strategy<\/span><\/a><span> in September 2020. Of the \u20ac7.2 billion investment by 2030, \u20ac1.5 billion will be spent on electrolysis plants and \u20ac1 billion on heavy trucks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The <\/span>EU-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/fuelcellsworks.com\/news\/jive-project-celebrates-a-milestone-over-200-fuel-cell-buses-have-been-ordered\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">JIVE<\/a> (Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles across Europe) seeks to deploy hydrogen-powered buses throughout its member states.<\/li>\n<li><span>Australia introduced its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.industry.gov.au\/data-and-publications\/australias-national-hydrogen-strategy\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>National Hydrogen Strategy<\/span><\/a><span> in late 2019, with the ultimate goal of the country being a \u201cmajor global player in clean hydrogen by 2030.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Canada recently released its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/climate-change\/the-hydrogen-strategy\/23080\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Hydrogen Strategy<\/span><\/a><span>, which includes a clean hydrogen economy as part of its goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Acceleration Toward Hydrogen in the U.S.<\/h2>\n<p>The United States has had several stops and starts on its hydrogen journey. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2003\/02\/bush-promotes-hydrogen-fuel-cells\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">George W. Bush<\/a> was a major and early proponent of hydrogen fuel cells. Obama eliminated his predecessor\u2019s $1.2 billion hydrogen plan, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/general\/2013\/11\/23\/president-obama-changes-course-and-backs-hydrogen.aspx\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">changed course<\/a> four years later to back fuel cells. Although Trump championed coal and other fossil fuels, in November 2020 the Department of Energy released its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydrogen.energy.gov\/pdfs\/hydrogen-program-plan-2020.pdf\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Hydrogen Program Plan<\/a> to further research, development, and demonstration activities.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration intends to invest $400 billion in clean energy and innovation over the next decade. In California, Gov. Newsom\u2019s September 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2020\/09\/23\/governor-newsom-announces-california-will-phase-out-gasoline-powered-cars-drastically-reduce-demand-for-fossil-fuel-in-californias-fight-against-climate-change\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">executive order<\/a> says that starting in 2035, all new cars and passenger trucks sold in the state will be zero emissions, and \u201call operations of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles shall be 100% zero emissions by 2045 where feasible.\u201d While neither plan specifically mentions hydrogen, the understanding is that zero-emission vehicles include FCEVs.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2023, senators Chris Coons (D-Delaware) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) introduced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coons.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/senators-coons-cornyn-reintroduce-legislation-to-support-hydrogen-technologies-for-emissions-reductions\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">package of four bills<\/a> to support <span>the adoption of hydrogen in\u00a0shipping ports, industry, trucking, and hydrogen infrastructure and innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>U.S.-based RMI (Rocky Mountain Institute) announced that its <span><a href=\"https:\/\/greenh2catapult.com\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Green Hydrogen Catapult<\/a> is \u201con track to meet its 2030 target to bring 45 GW of green hydrogen projects to final investment decision.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0This initiative aims to transform the world\u2019s most carbon-intensive industries: ammonia (fertilizer), steel production, shipping, methanol (petrochem), aviation, and trucking.\u00a0The coalition\u2019s hydrogen front-runners \u2013 10 companies as of May 2024 \u2013 include H2 Green Steel (Sweden), ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia), and the green mining company Fortescue (Australia).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that the U.S. is nowhere as far along as some of its Asian and European competitors when it comes to hydrogen adoption. As of May 2024, there were only <a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/stations\/states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">56 retail hydrogen stations<\/a> in the country (down from 57 in September 2023), 55 of which are in California. This progressive state also has the country\u2019s only non-retail <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/products\/pressure-products\/pressure-and-temperature-instruments-for-hydrogen-fueling-stations\/\">hydrogen fueling stations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But momentum is definitely moving in the right direction. For example, i<span>n January 2024, the Department of Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/oced\/articles\/doe-selects-consortium-bridge-early-demand-clean-hydrogen-providing-market-certainty\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">announced a\u00a0market-driven consortium<\/a> to \u201chelp accelerate commercial liftoff of the clean hydrogen economy and support the launch of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/biden-harris-administration-announces-7-billion-americas-first-clean-hydrogen-hubs-driving\" aria-label=\"Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs)\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs)<\/a>.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/llewellynking\/2024\/02\/13\/the-future-of-hydrogen-doe-and-moniz-start-setting-up-a-demand-market\/?sh=62a4f6567d73\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">members as of February 2024<\/a> are Energy Futures Initiative (EFI) Foundation, S&amp;P Global, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the global law firm Dentons, and the MIT Energy Initiative. Their aim, dubbed the Hydrogen Demand Initiative (H2DI), is to create a viable market for green hydrogen as part of the country\u2019s goal of net-zero\u00a0emissions\u00a0by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Hydrogen Fuels Cells Show Market Growth in 2024<\/h2>\n<p>In a shift so gradual that it\u2019s difficult for most Americans to perceive, interest in hydrogen technology is rising, as seen in the private sector:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>OCI\u2019s new facility, currently under development in Beaumont, Texas, will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldfertilizer.com\/nitrogen\/16022024\/oci-and-linde-partner-to-supply-clean-hydrogen-to-blue-ammonia-project-in-the-us-gulf-coast\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">produce blue ammonia using clean hydrogen and nitrogen<\/a> supplied by Linde. This partnership was announced in February 2024.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>With the help of California\u2018s <span>NorCAL ZERO Project, Hyundai delivered a fleet of 30 hydrogen-powered Class 8 trucks in May 2024 for\u00a0Glovis America, a Hyundai-owned logistics business headquartered in Irvine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Also in May 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/05\/01\/toyota-hydrogen-us-headquarters\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Toyota announced plans<\/a> to turn its <span>R&amp;D facility in Los Angeles into its new North American hydrogen headquarters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2020\/10\/26\/hydrogen-trucks-nikola-gm-toyota-hyundai-zero-emissions\/5981340002\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Toyota and truck maker Hino<\/span><\/a><span> will develop hydrogen fuel cell trucks for the North American market. Toyota is also collaborating with Washington-based Kenworth to develop heavy-duty hydrogen trucks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>In addition to a new battery system, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/general-motors\/2020\/11\/17\/general-motors-commercialize-ultium-battery-fuel-cell-technologies-future\/6258788002\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>General Motors<\/span><\/a><span> is working with Honda on Hydrotec, its hydrogen fuel cell technology. GM also bought an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/09\/08\/general-motors-takes-11percent-stake-and-2-billion-in-equity-in-electric-truck-maker-nikola-.html\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>11% stake in Nikola<\/span><\/a><span>, the Phoenix-based manufacturer of zero-emission semitrucks using battery or hydrogen fuel cell technology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The CEO and chairman of Cummins, the Indiana-based manufacturer of engines, said at the company\u2019s 2020 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cummins.com\/news\/2020\/11\/16\/cummins-seizes-day-lead-hydrogen-technology\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Hydrogen Day<\/span><\/a><span>: \u201cHydrogen technologies, particularly electrolyzers, will be a fast-growing and increasingly important part of our business over the next few years\u201d and that \u201cat some point in the future, it will be the single largest part of what Cummins provides to customers.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>CF Industries, the Illinois-based fertilizer company, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streetinsider.com\/Business+Wire\/CF+Industries+Joins+Hydrogen+Council+to+Further+Commitment+to+Clean+Energy+Economy\/17813695.html\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>has joined<\/span><\/a><span> the global <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hydrogencouncil.com\/en\/\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Hydrogen Council<\/span><\/a><span> as part of its commitment to \u201cdecarbonize the world\u2019s largest ammonia production platform.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Other US members of the Hydrogen Council\u2019s steering committee include 3M, Air Products, Chemours, Cummins, GM, and Microsoft. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although the U.S. is slower than some other nations in embracing hydrogen vehicles, the country is, in fact, a global leader when it comes to hydrogen technologies.
