Our temperature-compensated gas density solutions use one of four types of pressure sensing technologies: bimetal, bellow, reference chamber, and electronic sensing with Wheatstone bridge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Smart monitoring systems use a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/applications\/electronic-pressure-sensors-predictive-maintenance-2\/\">condition-based approach<\/a> \u2013 repair or replace something only when the need arises \u2013 rather than relying on just preventive or reactive maintenance. The online monitoring of SF<sub>6<\/sub> gas with trend analysis reduces the risk of failure and lowers operating costs by using such a condition-based strategy. No more unnecessary work within defined maintenance cycles. Fewer service calls to rectify faults. Less plant downtime. Higher profit margins.<\/p>\n<p>Using a gas density monitor also means faster turnaround times and greater safety. If the system warns of a leak, technicians can use a portable SF<sub>6<\/sub> detector to quickly determine the exact location of the damaged switchgear, line, or transformer, and then repair it. Our products for SF<sub>6<\/sub> gas density monitoring are solid, built to withstand harsh conditions and provide many years of reliable service.<\/p>\n<h2>Gas Density &amp; Temperature Compensation<\/h2>\n<p>A common application issue when it comes to gas measuring instruments is temperature compensation.\u00a0At a constant volume, the pressure of an ideal gas increases proportionally with temperature. This is Gay-Lussac\u2019s law. Therefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/products\/sf6-products\/gas-temperature-affect-gas-density-measurements\/\">any change in the ambient temperature will mean a similar change in the pressure<\/a> (Figure 1), even though the gas density remains constant. To determine the actual gas density, a pressure measuring instrument must take into account \u2013 or compensate for \u2013 variations in temperature (Figure 2). The indication on the dial is constant, despite the temperature-induced pressure variations. Only declining pressure due to loss of gas is displayed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Metal bellows: Gas density monitor with external temperature probe <\/strong>\u2014 The temperature compensation with external capillary sensor enables temperature measurement directly in the SF<sub>6<\/sub> gas tank.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Reference chamber: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/gas_density_switches.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Gas density switch <\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u2014 In WIKA\u2019s gas density switches, a compartment filled with pure SF<\/span><sub>6<\/sub><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> serves as the benchmark. A stainless steel sensor measures the density of the gas inside medium- or high-voltage equipment, and compares it against the gas inside the reference chamber. If the equipment\u2019s gas density drops to a specified level, the switch sends out a warning. Since the switch is hermetically sealed, the reference gas is impervious to variations in ambient temperature or atmospheric pressure. The result: No fluctuations in the measured value, and no false alarms caused by environmental changes. In addition, having a reference chamber means these switches do not require recalibration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Electronic sensor: Gas density transmitter <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u2014 A pressure transmitter specially developed for measuring SF<\/span><sub>6<\/sub><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> density delivers a temperature-compensated output signal. Its electronic sensor uses a <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/applications\/electronic-instrumentation-for-safe-and-reliable-pressure-measurements-in-high-pressure-applications\/\">Wheatstone bridge<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> to detect the pressure and temperature of the SF<\/span><sub>6<\/sub><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> inside gas-insulated equipment, and then uses an electronic evaluation system to accurately calculate the current gas density.
