So was Drew Firestone, VP of Strategy and Marketing. But they didn\u2019t think the company would win, as the competition was stiff. Thus, they were pleasantly surprised when WIKA was selected as a finalist for the Large Manufacturers (200+ employees) of the Year category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cJust getting this far was an honor,\u201d Drew said. \u201cWe were up against 14 other excellent companies.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:258px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2021\/04\/movers-makers-award-2021_resized.jpg\" alt=\"Movers and Makers Trophy\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Partnership Gwinnett chooses WIKA USA as Large Manufacturer of the Year<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<h2>Hats Off to WIKA Workers<\/h2>\n<p><span>On March 25, Brent intended to simply attend the awards ceremony, enjoy a sit-down breakfast, and listen to a keynote speech by the CEO of Waffle House. That\u2019s why he was not prepared to see his face on the promotional video WIKA had submitted \u2013 part of the nomination process \u2013 pop up on the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At first he was stunned. As the video clip played, he alternately felt humbled and proud, thinking of who were actually responsible for the honor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur 800-plus employees are the ones who make us who we are,\u201d Brent said. \u201cThey are the ones who are committed to not only the community, but to our customers.\u201d Indeed, the theme that morning was the importance of employees, especially those workers who kept essential businesses operating during the pandemic. (In 2020, WIKA USA made <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/applications\/wika-helps-in-fight-against-covid-19-with-medical-pressure-transducers-in-anesthesia-machines\/\"><span>pressure transducers for anesthesia machines<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/applications\/wika-customizes-manufactures-pressure-gauges-in-record-time-for-field-hospitals-medical-oxygen-manifolds\/\"><span>pressure gauges for oxygen manifolds<\/span><\/a><span>, and <\/span><span>pressure sensors for ventilators<\/span><span>.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/wika-insight\/new-wika-usa-president\/\">Todd Gardner<\/a>, President and Head of Americas at WIKA Group, concurred. \u201cThe past year has been tough for everyone, and I really have to take my hat off to our employees, who were there every day and did what had to be done. We couldn\u2019t have done it without them<\/span><span>.\u201d<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Corporate Citizenship Begins in the Community<\/h2>\n<p><span>Drew reflected on why WIKA was chosen for this honor.<\/span><span> \u201cWe are a well-rounded employer, not just in a business sense of good pay and benefits, but also corporate involvement.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>WIKA works closely with Gwinnett Technical College, a three-minute drive from the Lawrenceville headquarters. \u201cWe have a wonderful relationship, creating programs together not only in welding and such, but also in management,\u201d Brent said. \u201cTheir business students study our lean manufacturing and Kaizen approach \u2013 I call it WIKA-tizing \u2013 and the college helps us tremendously with customer-service training.\u201d The company also benefits from close ties with Georgia Gwinnett College, the alma mater of WIKA USA\u2019s two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/wika-insight\/wika-usas-first-graduate-trainee-blazes-a-trail-for-future-participants-to-follow\/\"><span>graduate trainees<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other aspects of civic involvement include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/wika-insight\/wika-corporate-giving-toys-for-tots\/\"><span>Toys for Tots<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/wika-insight\/wika-usa-gives-generously-to-reduce-food-insecurity\/\"><span>canned food drives<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/wika-insight\/wika-usa-bed-race-community-involvement\/\"><span>Bed Race<\/span><\/a><span> to end homelessness, and encouraging employees to participate in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/wika-insight\/wika-usa-joins-effort-feed-hungry-children-worldwide\/\"><span>From Hunger to Hope<\/span><\/a><span> during work hours. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A Winning Employer<\/h2>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width:268px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2021\/04\/2021-mm-badge-winner_resized.png\" alt=\"Movers and Makers badge\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">2021 Movers &amp; Makers Winner<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<p><span>Each nominated company was judged on the following nine criteria: economic impact in the region, innovation, operational history, community involvement, educational partnership, environmental\/safety efforts, work-life balance, employee education, and employee recognition programs. It is a family-owned company, and many employees speak of the caring ambiance. It is diverse: First-generation immigrants make up a sizable portion of their workforce. WIKA is a respected, innovative manufacturer that contributes to Gwinnett County\u2019s economic wealth.
