And it was with much pride that WIKA specialists watched as our load pins \u2013 critical control components on a civilian-occupied spacecraft \u2013 recently made a successful trip beyond Earth\u2019s bounds and back.<\/p>\n<h2>Requirements for Aerospace Force Sensors<\/h2>\n<p>A major aerospace company has a unique flight control system that ensures proper spaceship orientation for safe missions to space and back. To do this, engineers needed load pins that could precisely measure the forces experienced by the vehicle\u2019s flight control surfaces. But normal force sensors would not be up to the task. Aerospace load pins must meet demanding criteria not normally found in land-based applications.<\/p>\n<h2>WIKA Makes Robust Load Pins for Space Vehicles<\/h2>\n<p>One of WIKA\u2019s industrial specialties is aeronautics\/aerospace. For example, we make <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/applications\/direct-drive-pressure-gauges-aerospace-military-oxygen-systems\/\">direct drive pressure gauges for aerospace oxygen systems<\/a>, and our pressure transducers are found in jet engines\u2019 ice detection monitors.<\/p>\n<p>Engineers at this spaceflight company originally approached another supplier for load pins, but that manufacturer was not able to customize force sensors to their exact specifications. So they came to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/lp_wika_sensor_technology.WIKA\" rel=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">WIKA Sensor Technology<\/a> with drawings, technical specs, and testing requirements, and asked whether we could build load pins with the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Reliable operation in extremely cold temperatures, down to <\/span>\u221285\u00b0F<span> (<\/span>\u2212<span>65\u00b0C).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Ability to withstand high stress and fatigue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Compact dimensions to fit inside a gaging hole roughly half of the typical 0.625&#8243; (16mm) diameter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:346px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2021\/09\/custom-load-pin_b-388x167.png\" alt=\"product image\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Custom load pin for aerospace application<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<p>We succeeded in designing and producing exactly the force sensors the aerospace company asked for. That was the first challenge. The second was to subject the load pins to a variety of conditions in order to verify that they will function properly during space flight. The problem: no available testing equipment was capable of simulating the extreme operating conditions these load pins would experience.<\/p>\n<h2>WIKA Builds Specialized Aerospace Testing Equipment<\/h2>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:346px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/files\/2021\/09\/load-pin-testing-apparatus.png\" alt=\"photo of testing apparatus\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Custom-built testing apparatus<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<p>Our engineers, who love a good challenge, then designed and built specialized testing equipment with a thermal chamber that could:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply an alternating load of 52,600 pounds (23,860 kg) every 7 seconds.<\/li>\n<li><span>Hold an internal temperature of <\/span>\u221285\u00b0F<span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Using this apparatus, WIKA Sensor Technology demonstrated to the client that these custom-designed load pins held up beautifully even after 100,000 fully reversed cycles at the required low temperature.
