SF<sub>6<\/sub> is not toxic for humans, but it displaces oxygen and, therefore, can lead to asphyxia in enclosed areas, such as trenches and pits where personnel maintain, install, and remove SF<sub>6<\/sub>-insulated equipment.<\/p>\n<h2>The Problem<\/h2>\n<p>Due to the harmful effects of SF<sub>6<\/sub> on the environment and on humans, SF<sub>6<\/sub> emissions need to be controlled and minimized as much as possible.
