That\u2019s why Det Norske Veritas (DNV) recently tested the accuracy of various flow measuring technologies from a range of manufacturers, including WIKA\u2019s <span>FlowPak<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/span><\/strong><span><\/span><strong> differential pressure flow meter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Companies around the world have ambitious decarbonization goals. To reach those goals, they are adopting multiple approaches that include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Renewable energy in the form of solar, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/products\/pressure-products\/pressure-and-temperature-instruments-for-wind-turbine-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/knowhow\/how-does-a-hydroelectric-plant-work-a-brief-history-and-basic-mechanics-of-hydropower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydropower<\/a>, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/applications\/from-waste-to-watts-making-the-case-for-energy-recovery-plants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">municipal waste<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Clean, efficient <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/products\/force-products\/wikas-aerospace-force-sensors-will-help-make-air-travel-greener\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electric actuators<\/a> \u2013 rather than hydraulic and pneumatic systems \u2013 in aircrafts<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/applications\/hydrogen-a-beacon-of-hope-for-the-chemical-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hydrogen<\/a> as both fuel and feedstock in chemical and petrochemical plants<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/applications\/large-scale-carbon-capture-facility-uses-wikas-co2-flow-meters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">CCUS entails isolating carbon dioxide before and\/or after combusting fossil fuels, then either sequestering the greenhouse gas deep underground or using it in another application. This is an excellent way for the oil and gas industry to reduce their carbon footprint and achieve net-zero, with the possibility of even going carbon negative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s important for companies to know precisely how much of the emitted CO<sub>2<\/sub> is being captured, transported, and stored. For some, the purposes are corporate social responsibility (CSR) and for selling to other companies. For others, it is to meet national, regional, or international agreements or regulations for emissions reductions, including emission trading systems and carbon taxes.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of the various flow metering technologies available in the market, which ones for CO<sub>2<\/sub> gas metering are the most accurate?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Testing Measurement Accuracy for Mass Flow<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Det Norske Veritas (DNV), an international accreditation society, wanted to establish traceable flow standards for gas CO<sub>2<\/sub> measurements. Thus, it sponsored the Joint Industry Project (JIP) CO2MET Gas in collaboration with 24 industry partners to overcome challenges in CO<sub>2<\/sub> gas metering. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuvsud.com\/en-gb\/-\/media\/regions\/uk\/pdf-files\/event-documents\/gfmw-2024\/technical-papers\/3-ccus-2-dennis-van-putten_dnv.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">2024 DNV technical paper<\/a>, \u201cstringent measurement accuracy requirements for flow metering are anticipated to fall within the range of 1% to 2.5% for mass flow, regardless of the thermodynamic phase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of the project, DNV conducted extensive testing at its Technology Center in Groningen, Netherlands, to find out how the various metering technologies and their working principles compare against each other:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coriolis \u2013 based on fluid motion mechanics<\/li>\n<li>Ultrasonic \u2013 based on sound waves, including the Doppler effect method<\/li>\n<li>Turbine \u2013 based on rotational spin rate of blades<\/li>\n<li>Vortex \u2013 based on the frequency of vortices as the fluid encounters an obstruction<\/li>\n<li>Venturi and V-cone meters \u2013 based on differential pressure (DP) measurement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Test setups<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The tests were set up to replicate two of the main applications of CO<sub>2<\/sub> gas metering in CCUS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Onshore pipeline transport, gas phase<\/strong> \u2013 medium pressure and ambient temperatures<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pressures: 32, 16, and 8 bar (464, 232, and 116 psi)<\/li>\n<li>Temperatures: 15\u00b0C to 20\u00b0C (59\u00b0F to 68\u00b0F)<\/li>\n<li>Gas compositions\n<ul>\n<li>5% N<sub>2<\/sub> (at 32 barA only as a baseline check)<\/li>\n<li>5% CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/li>\n<li>CO<sub>2<\/sub> mix 1*: 98% CO<sub>2<\/sub> + 2% N<sub>2<\/sub><\/li>\n<li>CO<sub>2<\/sub> mix 2*: 95% CO<sub>2<\/sub> + 3% N<sub>2<\/sub> + 1% CH<sub>4<\/sub> + 1% H<sub>2<br \/>\n<\/sub><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><small>* The mixes test for performance when the piped CO<sub>2<\/sub> is impure.<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Ship loading and unloading, vapor return of liquid phase<\/strong> \u2013 low pressure and low temperature<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pressure: 15 bar (218 psi)<\/li>\n<li>Temperatures: \u221225\u00b0C (\u221213\u00b0F)<\/li>\n<li>Gas compositions\n<ul>\n<li>5% N<sub>2<\/sub> (baseline check)<\/li>\n<li>5% CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of the 14 flow measuring instruments that DNV evaluated, one was WIKA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/flc_hhr_fp.WIKA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">FLC-HHR-FP<\/a> FlowPak<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> <span>Venturi<\/span><span><\/span><span><\/span> nozzle flow meter, 6&#8243; 300# RF <span>(raised face flange) <\/span><span><\/span>316 stainless steel. The low-temperature test also made use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wika.com\/en-us\/t15.WIKA?highlightedText=T15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">T15 digital temperature transmitter<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/products\/temperature-products\/pt100-sensors-high-vibration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WIKA Pt100 RTD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>FlowPak Advantages: Performance, Reliability, Efficiency, Flexibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n      <div class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width:308px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/files\/2020\/12\/flowpak.png\" alt=\"FlowPak flow meter\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">FlowPak flow meter<\/p><\/div>\n    \n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The HHR (high head recovery) FlowPak, a Venturi nozzle with a proprietary design, performed well in comparison to the other instruments. At the highest flow rates for the two test conditions, the deviation from the reference low meters was in the range of \u00b11.0% for the onshore pipeline scenario (due to pressure and temperature detected far from the FlowPak\u00ae), and \u00b10.5% for ship loading\/unloading. Due to the characteristics of the volumetric flow measurement by DP technology (square root function), the accuracy naturally decreases with medium and lower pressure due to DP transmitter limitations. We can improve it by using a higher-performance DP transmitter or a multiple-transmitter array in real applications cases to keep the measurement uncertainty under the standard requirements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The FlowPak<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is a very precise and stable flow measuring instrument designed especially for applications without sufficient space for the straight pipe diameters required by traditional DP flow meters to be ISO 5167:2022 compliant. Even when mounted after two 90\u00b0 elbows, the FlowPak maintains its accuracy. This is a key advantage for skids and smaller-scale plants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">This innovative flow meter also ensures minimal permanent pressure loss for greater energy efficiency. Compare the FlowPak<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> to the Coriolis meter, which can cause high pressure drops. (With higher pressure losses, pumps and compressors must work harder to maintain a stable flow rate.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, as a mechanical instrument with no moving parts, the FlowPak<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> offers long-term performance reliability and cost savings over ultrasonic and turbine flow meters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally, the FlowPak<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is ideal for custody transfers.
