However, humidity in the gas can decrease its insulation strength and promote corrosion in the equipment, leading to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wika.com\/us\/\/products\/sf6-products\/critical-conditions-caused-sf6-leaks-avoid\/\">serious health and environmental problems related to leaks<\/a>.\u00a0Therefore, one of the top priorities for T&amp;D engineers is to monitor the humidity level of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS<u>)<\/u>. SF<sub>6<\/sub> handling is crucial. As the humidity in SF<sub>6<\/sub>\u00a0approaches the gas\u2019s water saturation point, operators must make sure the wet gas is replaced with dry gas.<\/p>\n<h2>Replacing Sulfur Hexafluoride<\/h2>\n<p>SF<sub>6<\/sub>\u00a0handling can be tricky. The gas is nontoxic, but it easily displaces oxygen in enclosed areas, which can asphyxiate nearby personnel. What\u2019s more, SF<sub>6<\/sub>\u00a0is a very powerful greenhouse gas \u2013 23,900 times more effective than CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0in trapping heat.
