From pressure gauges and sensors to valves and diaphragm seal systems, the right instruments and accessories help ensure product consistency and quality in a pulp and paper facility while maximizing safety and efficiency.

This article is a continuation of “Temperature Monitoring Solutions for the Pulp and Paper Industry.”

The liquids used and produced in a pulp and paper facility include black and white cooking liquors and various bleaches. Several processes, from chemical pulping to drying, rely on steam service. To monitor and control the pressure of various media, use pressure assemblies and valves that are designed for aggressive environments.

Diaphragm Seals: To protect instruments, processes, and the environment

Diaphragm seals separate the medium from the measuring instrument.

Most pressure instruments are not equipped to come into direct contact with clogging, crystallizing, or abrasive liquids, as such media would harm the inner mechanism of pressure gauges and the sensing element of pressure transmitters and switches. To protect pressure gauges and sensors from aggressive media in pulp pumps, chemical pipelines, and the like, use diaphragm seals. These are thin yet durable metal discs placed between the measuring instrument and the process medium. The pressure that the process applies to the diaphragm is then hydrostatically transmitted to the instrument via a system fill fluid.

WIKA is a specialist in innovative diaphragm seals and DS assemblies. They come in a wide range of designs and abrasion-resistant materials that not only protects pressure instruments, but also prevents toxic emission from escaping. We also offer a pressure transmitter with a flush diaphragm: The S-11 is a high-quality instrument specifically designed to measure media that would clog the pressure channel of convention process connections.

Valves for Pulp and Paper Applications

IBF1 monoblock with flange connection

A wide range of specialized valves are used to control and isolate the various gaseous and liquid media in a pulp and paper plant: water, steam, nitrogen, methanol, biodiesel, ethanol, dirty media, toxic gases, and more.

IBF (inline ball float) flanged monoblock valves like the IBF1, IBF2, and IBF3 allow the direct connection of a pressure measuring instrument to a flanged pipeline or vessel without needing an interface valve. They also serve as a shut-off valve with draining or venting function as a tapping point for instrumentation. These IBF valves increase safety thanks to metal-enclosed seats, a double-body seal, and leak tightness in accordance with BS6755 and ISO 5208 leakage rate A.

For maximum protection against leaks, use an IVM (integrated valve module) monoflange valve. Compact and lightweight, model IVM is ideal for the shut-off and venting of pressure measuring instruments. Its metal valve seat also has leak-tested tightness in accordance with BS6755 and ISO 5208 leakage rate A. The instrument version (screwed and bolted bonnet) and process version are manufactured to prevent fugitive emissions according to TA-Luft and ISO 15848-1.

WIKA’s portfolio of pressure accessories include needle valves and valve manifolds, all with emission protection, enhanced safety, a low-wear design, low torque, and smooth operation even at high pressure. Our robust, leak-tight sampling valves, like the IBS3/IBJ4, make it easy to extract media from or inject products into tanks, reactors, and pipelines. In addition, customers can request specific combinations of instrument-and valve assemblies.
